Course Description:
Sports massage is an aspect of massage therapy that specifically is designed for the needs of athletes. It has become an important foundation an athletic routine from sports medicine clinics; college training rooms, professional teams, as well as Olympic training and competition, to optimize their performance.

Massage is able to provide that extra edge to the highly competitive athlete, and has become a necessary component for a complete workout. The complete workout is not only the exercise, but also the maintenance for all the wear and tear as well as major and minor injuries that naturally occur with strenuous movement. Sports massage focuses on the athlete, their training, performance and recovery using different massage techniques at specific times including pre-event, post event maintenance. Method of Learning:
PowerPoint presentation and manual. Demonstrations with hands on practice.

Learning Outcomes:
Participants will understand the difference between sports massage and other forms of massage. Therapists will be able to effectively apply methods learned for pre-event, post event and maintenance sports massage.

Learning Objectives:

  • Will be able to define sports massage and its differences from other forms of massage
  • Will know the benefits of sports massage
  • Understands what happens to the body with overuse and the factors involved
  • Understands what happens with different types of soft tissue injuries
  • Understand inflammation, scar tissue, adhesions and pain for the athlete
  • Knows RICE
  • Understands the benefits of cryotherapy and applications
  • Understands the difference between hypothermia and hyperthermia, signs and symptoms, and treatment of each
  • Understands what a cramp is and how to stop it
  • Understands hydration and dehydration
  • Will be able to demonstrate techniques for pre event, post event, and maintenance massage - including ROM, joint mobilization, stretches, PNF and MET
  • Understands the parameters for pre event and post event massage
  • Will be able to show treatment for sport specific injuries

    Prerequisite:
    Completion of at least a 500-Hour Massage Therapy/Bodywork program or other Health-Care Practitioner program
